Welcome to buildabungalow.com:  "Yesterday's Bungalows for Today"

Buildabungalow.com is all about building and re-building Arts & Crafts Bungalows in Treasure Lake, Pennsylvania, a gated community near the 101 exit of Interstate 80, approximately 2 hours from Pittsburgh and 1 hour and 15 minutes from State College, home of Penn State University. We will be launching our new "American Collection" next month, so be sure to stop back and see exciting bungalow designs from different regions of the Country as well as Prairie School and Four Square designs--all in the "All American" Arts & Crafts tradition. We will also be showcasing an original Build a Bungalow design, our "virtual bungalow" that you will be able to walk-through and add your personal touches before it's built! The "Independence Bungalow" will be the first of our new "American Collection" and will be energy efficient, eco-friendly and accessible to people of all ages and abilities. We look forward to telling you more about this amazing bungalow and, better yet, walking you though it . . . virtually. Ask to be added to our mailing list to receive news as it develops. Just email me at buildabungalow@aol.com or complete the form under "Contact Us."

On this site you will find Bungalows that are available for purchase and Bungalows you can build on one of our premium home sites. If you are tired of homes without character, warmth and unity with nature, then you will fall in love with the simplicity and craftsmanship of the American Bungalow.

The bungalow became America's first national house design from 1880 to 1930 because it was the first home style that could be found in every region of the Country. Bungalows are usually one or one-and-a-half story with at least one bedroom on the first floor and typically have a front porch. Our new "American Collection" will also offer some two-story designs like the American Four Square and low-slung contemporary Prairie School styles in the tradition of Frank Lloyd Wright. You will still find many of the same Bungalow characteristics, though, like: wide overhangs, rafter tails, decorative brackets and natural materials like stone, wood clapboard and shake shingles that grace their exteriors. Porch columns are often tapered (smaller at the top and wider at the bottom) giving them the appearance of anchoring the home to the earth. They may have pergolas with vining ivy or flowers that bond these homes even more with their natural surroundings.

They are usually seen in natural settings but can also be found in more urban environments in walking distance to town conveniences.

As Gustav Stickley said, bungalows are based on the "fundamental principals of honesty, simplicity and usefulness--the kind of houses that children will rejoice all their lives to remember as home."

Bookmark this website and come back often. We will have information about the bungalow lifestyle as well as bungalow designs that you can build or are available for purchase through Re/Max Select Group. We will also be adding links to other websites that display handcrafted furniture, textiles and bungalow accessories.
